During major operations you will be unconscious until the surgery is completed. Following this you will be “drowsy” for some time. During this time you will be closely monitored to ensure that you are recovering well. The recovery room nursing staff are specially trained to care for patients during this time.
As you become less “drowsy” you will be given appropriate medications to relieve your pain and other side effects that may occur such as nausea and vomiting.
Many patients following uncomplicated surgery will go home the same day. If you notice some side effects or untoward effects following the surgery do not hesitate to phone your surgeon / anaesthetist to seek advice.
